The Labor Workshop led by Colette Crawford
Childbirth is a transcendent experience unlike any other. How can you prepare for something so spontaneous and vast as birth?
You may wonder: What will labor be like? How will I cope with the pain? Will I be able to help her the way she needs me to?
It is normal to feel anxious about the unknown. The intention of this workshop is to help ease any anxiety you may have about labor and delivery, and allow you to bring more relaxation and consciousness to each step of your journey through movement, breathing, massage and relaxation techniques, and specific labor positions. You will also learn about the normal process of labor, how the environment can affect labor, along with information on the benefits and risks of our current birthing practices.
By the end of the workshop, you will feel inspired and confident to birth your baby!As one year dissolves and another dawns, and our community invites you into this immersive experience will weave pranayama, sound healing, and Sankalpa Dhāraṇā meditation. Drawing from the heart of yogic philosophy we are gathering not to fix ourselves, but to remember our wholeness and align to our lifes vision. Rooted in the wisdom and power of the Yamas and Niyamas, these practices guide us back to the inner coherence that fuels authentic manifestation—not from lack, but from embodied abundance.

I began yoga as a teenager in the late 1960’s with my mother and took my first classes with Maria Svoboda. I attended Richard Schactel’s first yoga teacher training and was certified in 1986, and then in 1992 through BKS Iyengar. My greatest teacher and the source of constant inspiration on this path is my Guru, Mata Amritandamayi, or Amma, as she is known. It is through Amma, I am learning the true essence of yoga and spiritual living.
I am an experienced registered nurse specializing in maternal/child health, labor and delivery, lactation and childbirth education. The inspiration for the prenatal yoga program came from my public health nursing days when I weaved in yoga poses with childbirth education for women who were hospitalized. During these years I worked with pregnant and parenting teens and was the president of the Snohomish County Teen Pregnancy Task Force.
I have assisted hundreds of women in labor and early postpartum care, including being an international board certified lactation consultant. Since 1989 I have taught prenatal yoga to thousands of women, their families and yoga teachers from all over the world.
Another one of my specialties is therapeutic yoga. In 1992 I created Heal Your Back as a result of my own healing journey using yoga after I had suffered a severe back injury in a car accident while eight months pregnant. At this time I experienced my first CranioSacral Therapy treatment which gave me great benefit. After years of referring out I received certificates from Upledger Institute to practice CranioSacral Therapy for all ages with a specialty in pregnancy and pediatrics.
My commitment is to helping you on your journey of health, healing and spiritual growth. I am dedicated to assisting women and their families to actualize their inner wisdom to birth and parent consciously. It has been a gift and privilege to parent my four children with my loving husband, Bruce. The path of family is my meditation.
Colette is also available for CranioSacral appointments for adults, pregnancy and infants/children as well as lactation consulting.

Why its an honor for SolarYou Yoga community to meet Colette Crawford and her prenatal teachings?
Irina, SolarYou Yoga studio owner, first met Colette when after a miscarriage she was looking into softer practices and a wisdom of prenatal yoga. After the first day of the training Irina told Colette: "I had to go through miscarriage, wait a bit, signup to your training to meet you because now I know I could be a mother I would never become without meeting you"Lately one year from training Colette was a doula on Irina’s home birth and forever stays in the memory of Irina’s family as a facilitator of the most joyful event of this local family’s life. When Irina remodeled SolarYou Yoga space she made it with a thought of prenatal and postpartum community to be invited to this place one day (no mirrors, clean bright space, thicker custom made bolsters for prenatal yoga).Often referred to as “Mother of Prenatal and Postnatal Yoga”, Colette Crawford, first opened the yoga studio, in Seattle’s Green Lake neighborhood, at a time when most Americans had never heard of the word ‘yoga’: "When I started teaching yoga, yoga mats didn’t even exist. We used carpet and bare floor to support our poses,” says ColetteAs with any birth, the idea to open a prenatal and family yoga-wellness center went through its own stages of pregnancy. The biggest turning points all came in 1989. This first evolved when Colette was working as a Public Health, Labor and Delivery Nurse, and was asked to teach an ongoing Childbirth Education class to pregnant women enrolled in a drug rehabilitation program: “These women needed to know how to prepare for birth without drugs. When they started sharing about their back problems and other pregnancy-related pains, I began teaching them prenatal yoga. Even though the rehabilitation program required them to be with me, they liked it, and said what they learned from me really helped.”What began as 3-student prenatal class has grown into a nationally recognized center where thousands of mothers from the Seattle area, and across the country, have come over the years to learn how to nurture and connect to themselves, their babies and their families throughout their lives. Colette feels a sincere love and care for each and every student and their life’s journey. Combined with her expertise of over 45 years of yoga and meditation practices, and childbirth nursing, midwifery and doula studies, Colette has created a sacred space—an oasis—for new mothers and all women or men wanting to nurture and expand their consciousness. She also offers a highly acclaimed Prenatal Yoga Teacher Training program that draws students from around the world.
